THE LEGO MOVIE 2 opens where the first film ceased. Immediately after Emmet, Lucy and their friends have made peace with President Business, an extraterrestrial invasion of Duplomonsters is taking place, making short work of the raked Lego metropolis Bricksburg. The invasions continue and the city is reduced to a post-apocalyptic ruin, where everyone is dressed in gray brown and a pest humor is compulsory. The ever optimistic Emmet (Chris Pratt) is the exception to the rule. In this rugged environment he suddenly falls off the mark.
Five years later another extraterrestrial visitor arrives in the guise of General Mayhem. She kidnaps Lucy, Batman, Metalbeard, Benny and Unikitty so they can attend the wedding of her metamorphic queen Watevra Wanabi. Emmet, who is not deemed worthy of kidnapping, goes on an intergalactic journey to save his friends. He is soon introduced to the überstere intergalactic cowboy marque Rex Dangervest (again Pratt in a kind of homage to his most famous roles). Together they infiltrate the Systar System to prevent the wedding.
